Villa Ferraia

Villa Ferraia is a luxury villa sitting on a secluded mountain top in the countryside not far from a tiny stone village called Tocchi, which is located approximately 20 minutes drive south of Siena. Records show the villa dates back to 1204 and it gets its name from the word 'ferro', or iron, which was mined there in medieval times.
In the extensive gardens there is a beautiful large pool positioned below the villa. The lawn surrounding the pool is dotted with sunbeds, chairs and umbrellas, providing guests the perfect sunny position to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views of the river Merse valley. Next to the pool there is a sauna that is open for use during predefined times of the day, the exact times will be provided on arrival at the villa. The sauna area also has showers and changing rooms.
The villa was inhabited until the start of World War II, after which it was left to fall into ruin. In 1995 the present owner bought the property and has painstakingly restored it, transforming it into a wonderfully luxurious villa that allows guests the opportunity to pamper themselves.
Villa Ferraia can accommodate up to 27 guests in 14 bedrooms. The main part of the villa is divided into 9 double bedrooms for a total of 18 sleeping places. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, with bath and handheld shower and complimentary Florentine soaps and shampoos. The beds are made up with fine linens. All the bedrooms have flat screen televisions. The suites also have comfortable sitting areas.
There are three more suites all accessed externally. The old chapel has been restored and converted into a suite for two people with its own sitting room.
To the other side of the villa is a three bedroom suite which also includes a small sitting room and a pretty covered terrace with wooden benches.
The third suite is for one person with a double bed, the sleeping area is on a mezzanine floor which has a low ceiling. Outside there is a small but wonderfully private furnished terrace.
A chef service is available on request, it is only for breakfast and dinner which can be prepared and served at an extra cost. The cost of the food, cleaning and preparing the table is not included in the cost of the chef service and paid as extra. Meals will be served in the spacious dining room or out on the large sunny patio covered by umbrellas.
From the patio there are fantastic views of the forest clad hillside around the villa and the Merse valley below. Please note guests are not allowed use of the main kitchen because of the industrial appliances it is equipped with.
Off the dining area there is a glass conservatory with a small bar where guests can meet to enjoy pre-dinner aperitifs, or just relax and enjoy the views of the gardens and valley beyond.
The comfort of the villa is based on the vision of the owner who wanted to offer something that no-one else was providing, creating the perfect place for his guests to relax and get away from it all while still being close enough to visit all the major sites of Tuscany.
He sees the villa as a place for people to get together to share their ideas in a relaxed and secluded environment, whilst still retaining all the modern home comforts, set in a beautiful location.
The property includes the sauna next to the pool and a spa baths area. The three spa baths are down some steps from a large sunny terrace. Each small pool is lined with seats and has a different water temperature. They are located in a quiet area of the property so guests can relax completely and listen to the sounds of nature and admire the breathtaking scenery from the pools.
Externally accessed from the main building is another building which houses a small library and cinema with adjoining toilets. This airy room is furnished with comfortable chairs and equipment for film projection. The room can be converted into a conference room on request.
Across the lawn, hidden in the surrounding forest, is an observatory which is equipped with a high-tech telescope, providing guests with the opportunity to star gaze far away from the light pollution of the cities.
Although, the observatory cannot be used without qualified supervision, the Astronomical Society of Siena is at guests disposal by appointment, to show and explain the wonders of the night skies.
The villa is surrounded by its own large grounds; those immediately adjacent to the house have been carefully landscaped to provide pretty lawns with magnificent flower beds and fantastic views. The well maintained garden leads into a natural forest area that covers most of the land of Villa Ferraia.
Scattered around the gardens are several furnished terraces where it is possible to enjoy the Tuscan sun in total tranquillity.
To one side of the pool, a short distance from the villa, there is a camp fire area which has been carefully chosen and laid with large stones to make a fire pit, providing a fantastic spot to enjoy the magnificent view and the beauty of evenings by a campfire. Wood is provided.
The forest has several hiking trails with benches located at several points to admire the view. These trails pass various livestock that belong to the villa owner. These animals include a rare breed of pigs, the local Cinta Senese pig, Chianina cattle highly prized for their meat for Florentine steak, chicken and sheep
There are also a couple of small lakes which are filled with trout which, on request, can be cooked for you by the chef.
On returning back towards the villa there is a huge vegetable garden filled with local vegetables. There is also a large green house and a covered terrace with cooking facilities where guests can assist the chef in preparing meals. Vegetables from this garden can also be picked and then used for the evening meal at the villa.
Adjacent to the property there is a stable where horse riding tours can be organised, however the horses are for intermediate and experienced riders only. Hunting days can also be organised with the local hunters. These activities are not included in the price of the villa.
Villa Ferraia has a wide range of comforts, including under floor heating and cooling systems and air-conditioning if required. There is a reception area where villa staff will be able to assist you with any questions you may have. There is a fax and phone at reception for emergency use only.
All the rooms except for the single room are made up as doubles, but these (with the exception of one double) can be changed, and made up as single beds if required. Included in the price of the villa is daily maid service, and electricity usage up to 300kW.
On the property there is a non commercial helipad. A helicopter can be organised from the airports to the villa for an extra charge.

Pool Info
The large pool is positioned on a terrace below the villa, and is surrounded by a lush green lawn dotted with sunbeds and umbrellas. The poolside views of the valley and pine clad hillside are quite breathtaking.
The pool is slightly heated by using the excess heat produced by the solar panels, therefore the water temperature rarely goes below 18 degrees Celsius. Next to the pool is a spacious sauna which also has changing rooms and toilets. Please note the sauna is only open at certain times during the day; these will be communicated on arrival. Pool towels are supplied. The pool is 20 metres in length and is 1.6 metres in the deepest section. It is always open.
There are also three small spa pools, each of which is heated to a different temperature, allowing guests to reap the benefits of moving from warm to cooler pools. These pools are in a secluded and quiet area of the property next to the villa therefore providing the ideal spot to relax.
Nearest town
The nearest little village is Tocchi and then San Lorenzo di Merse, however, there is not much in either of these two beautiful little villages. San Lorenzo di Merse is about 4km away and has a tiny grocery shop. The main town for shopping is Monticiano which is 10km away; here there are also several good restaurants.

I like To Tuscany, partly because it has a tremendous range of villas, and partly because (unlike many companies) it has an excellent website that provides what you really want when choosing a villa.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
